Love is in the air again here at My Manx Wedding – we have been sent another lovely romantic proposal story to feature – and guys, take notice of this one… if you want to ask the lady you love to marry you, don’t get stressed out about how to do it. Good old-fashioned romance is just as beautiful as anything else! Over to Claire to tell their love story…
Stephen and I have been together since late 2012 after knowing each other through mutual friends since around 2009. In the last four years together we have been through a lot; the elation of finding out we were pregnant, the stress of moving house, the absolute heartbreak of losing Stephen’s brother in December 2014 and then the joy of bringing our beautiful daughter into the world, but through it all we became stronger and stronger. All I had to do now was to wait for the day to come where he would ask me “THE” question.
So, on the 16th of July 2016, the day before my 29th birthday, I get a text message from Stephen while he was out walking the dog telling me that I needed to put my little black dress on and be ready to go out by 5pm. How exciting! As we were waiting for the babysitters to arrive Stephen was becoming ever more anxious to get going, pacing the room and watching impatiently out of the window. I found this highly amusing because he hates being late for anything and for once it wasn’t me he was waiting for! Finally, the babysitters arrive and we were out the door – I still had no idea where we were going.
We parked on Douglas Promenade and as we were about to walk past the Claremont Hotel he grabs my hand and guides me towards the door, with a smirk on his face. He tells the girl behind the reception desk he has dinner and a room booked – what a lovely birthday surprise this was turning out to be! Dinner wasn’t booked until 7pm so we made our way up to our room where a beautiful bouquet of flowers was waiting with a bottle of wine and some chocolates!
After finishing off the wine we made our way down to dinner and after our starter and a few more drinks Stephen tells me that he has one more surprise for me but I pass it off with some hilariously witty remark and it was soon forgotten about as our main course arrived. Then after another drink or two, he asked me if I want my next surprise and slightly confused I agreed.
Then he stood up, staring at me as he fumbled around in his pocket and drops to one knee… Well, I didn’t know what do with myself! I didn’t know if I was going to laugh or cry!
“Will you be my wife?”
I was still a big blubbering mess, hugging and kissing him and I hadn’t even given him an answer!
“You haven’t given me an answer yet”
By this time the entire restaurant was aware of what was happening and had erupted into cheers and congratulations! We were presented with a beautiful bottle of champagne, and as you can imagine I spent the rest of the night with a stupidly big smile on my face, telling everyone and anyone that we had just got engaged.
He had kept it a secret from everyone except my dad who he had been to see the day before to ask for my hand. I was completely shocked and am massively in love with this man – I couldn’t be any happier than I am right now.
