Year 11 students across the Isle of Man heard the exciting news a few weeks ago that their end of year Prom celebrations were going to be going ahead after months of social distancing due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
At Ramsey Grammar School the Prom committee, including Deputy Head of Year Gemma Bullock, put out a call for help as they suddenly found themselves with only 10 days to organise an event that would have usually taken months and that call was heard by former Ramsey Grammar students and entrepreneurs who all now work in the local event industry.
Andrew Skinner & Sheree Crowe from Traditional Oak Swing knew that their beautiful swing would make a perfect backdrop for photographs and were eager to get involved, “We had started our first year in business off on such a high with lots of wedding bookings for 2020 and then Covid 19 put a stop to it all and left us feeling a bit deflated. We were so grateful that our clients showed us so much support and this was our way of giving something back”.
They teamed up with Heidi Baker from The Flower Studio to provide florals to decorate the swing. Heidi, who has run her own florist business for over 11 years and has seen nearly all her wedding and event bookings for 2020 postponed or cancelled explains “Spreading positivity is so important at the moment and we all wanted to say thank you to the local Isle of Man community after years of them supporting our own businesses. Being former Ramsey Grammar School students ourselves this seemed perfect, especially after all the students have been through in the last few months”
Robert Shimmin, Head of Year 11 described the evening as an outstanding success “The students looked resplendent in their immaculate suits and beautiful dresses. When they arrived, they were greeted by family, friends and members of the Ramsey community in what was a marvellous spectacle to behold after the difficulties of the last few months.”
One student commented “It just shows how well the community can come together in a time of need to produce a fabulous decorative display to end our school journey perfectly!”
Head Teacher Annette Baker described how family, friends and most of the teaching and support staff of Ramsey Grammar School gathered together to give the Year 11 Class of 2020 a fantastic send off and thanked the ex-students who generously gave their time and services free of charge “I have never been prouder to be Head Teacher of the family that is Ramsey Grammar School.”
